Tips During Stay-at-Home

Welcome everyone!

My name is Sachi Saunt. I’m a sophomore at Redondo Union High School and a SBFC Youth Advisor.  These past months of distance learning and being in the house constantly has been a struggle for me, as I am sure it has been extremely hard for all high school students.

I wrote this blog as an inspiration for myself and I can hopefully inspire other people as well to get up and do simple/fun tasks around the house to better your life.  I know for me, quarantine has been feeling dreary and colorless, and I hope to motivate you to improve your living situation and as a result, hopefully your mental health as well. I will provide plenty of ways to beautify your surroundings, tips/hacks to feel confident, and plans that ameliorate your physical and mental well-being. I hope this site will help you, whether that is to provide you with ideas for polishing up your living situation, give you some interesting projects to try, or even be a source for your entertainment.

This might just be me, but I find that when the environment that I work in, sleep in and live in, is tidy, my frame of mind is recovered. My mood as soon as I clean my room makes me already happier. I like to keep my room a clean place where I feel calm and collected. I enjoy waking up in my new beautiful room, feeling relaxed and content.

I like to clean and reorganize my surroundings regularly. I find I need to make an effort to make time to do so. It does take an extra ten minutes when you wake up, to make your bed and organize your desk for the day. For me, accomplishing something as soon as I get up is already a boost of motivation for the day. It makes me feel like I have accomplished something important, without really changing much. Think of how you will feel once your room is clean, and you will soon look forward to it everyday. I know this makes me sound like an overachiever, but I tend to clean my room up to three times a week, and recently, I’ve also been adding seasonal decorations that make me feel joyful about the holidays.

To cheer yourself up this time of year in particular, I recommend investing in some festive holiday lights, or if you don’t have some, then make garlands using paper snowflakes, tinsel, etc. Customize and modify your room to what fits your style best. The best part about a room is when it gives you cheery vibes and positive energy. It’s important to be in a space that you enjoy being in, and you have all your necessities near you.

Here are some ideas to decorate your room, and ways to upgrade your living spaces:

  • Get some storage bins for your closet

  • Make some artwork for your walls

  • Donate old clothes

  • Light a calming scented candle

  • Make a cactus mini-garden and water it weekly

  • Open your windows and let light in once in a while

  • Incorporate fun and bright colors into your room

  • Do some DIY decorations for the holidays

  • Paint a wall or room (here I painted the bathroom walls and also made a fun wall display for scented lotions and oils!)

  • Bring out the festive decorations from your closet or garage, and decorate your house

I look forward to sharing more tips with you in the future. Happy holidays!
